ABOUT GRACE KELLY: FROM HOLLYWOOD TO MONACO – ARTISTS’ TRIBUTES
Co-organised by the Galaxy Entertainment Group Foundation and Grimaldi Forum of Monaco, the exhibition traces the story of legendary movie star Grace Kelly (1929-1982), from her Hollywood days as an Oscar-winning actress, to become Princess of Monaco. With their diplomatic flair and star power, the royal couple – Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace – introduced the second smallest country in the world onto the international stage, while at the same time captured the hearts of the people of Monaco and the rest of the world.
Inspired by the iconic Grace Kelly, artists from around the world – from different disciplines of Art – created their works with her as their inspiration: Andy Warhol, with his unique pop art image, Alfred Hitchcock, with his series of thrilling and suspense films, famous photographers, from Howell Conant to Phillipe Halsman, featured her as their subject, as well as fashion houses which created items that would be described as the iconic “Grace Kelly Look”.
On display were fashion pieces, jewellery items and accessories, photos and moving images from the collections of the Prince’s Palace of Monaco. The exhibition took visitors from Grace Kelly’s Hollywood acting days to her palace life in Monaco. Exhibits included photographs and moving images of Grace Kelly with public figures, celebrities and royalties, her Oscar award, her wedding gown, the eponymous Hermes Kelly bag and her favourite jewellery pieces designed and crafted by Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, highlighted with a rare print of Grace Kelly by Andy Warhol, an iconic figure in the "Pop Art" movement.
The Exhibition ran for 3 months at Galaxy Macau, with guided tours for the public on Saturdays and Sundays during the event period. Over three months, the Exhibition attracted over 170,000 visitors. Two multimedia artworks on Grace Kelly, created by French visual artist Stéphane Bolongaro, were also presented as part of the Art Macao Main Exhibition at the Macau Museum of Art. Separately, the Foundation also invited local schools to join docent-led exhibition tours, followed by various related art, design and photography workshops afterwards.
Embassy Night
As part of the many events held during the 5 months spanning Art Macao, the Galaxy Entertainment Group hosted an Embassy Night on 20th August, 2019, inviting members of all consular corps that attend to Macau affairs to have a chance to experience Art Macao. The evening features a guided tour for guests at the Grace Kelly Exhibition, followed by dinner at Oasis at Galaxy Macau, featuring dishes from local Macanese and Portuguese cuisines, with performances by local Macau artists throughout the evening.

ART MACAO 2019
The "Grace Kelly - from Hollywood to Monaco" was a presentation by the Galaxy Entertainment Group for the Art Macao 2019 extravaganza. The Grimaldi Forum Monaco, joined the Galaxy Entertainment Group Foundation as co-organisers for the exhibition. The Grimaldi Forum, a conference and congress centre located on the seafront of Monaco, was responsible for the exhibition’s scenographic design and logistical implementation, with the support of the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, which generously loaned for the exhibition’s display precious collections from the Palace’s Archives.
Under the patronage of the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture, “Art Macao” was launched in May 2019 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Macao’s handover to China. The 5-month international art and cultural event was organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Macao Government Tourism Office, and co-organized by the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau and the Higher Education Bureau.
Art Macao comprises an array of exhibitions hosted by the six operators of hotels and integrated resorts, and included a main exhibition at the Macao Museum of Art, showcasing highlight exhibits from each of the exhibitors. There were also several outdoor art installations featuring artists and sculptors from Macau and cities from nearby regions. Chinese and foreign masterpieces from different historical periods, ranging from timeless classics to contemporary artworks, were on offer for local residents and tourists alike to present them with a memorable cultural experience.
“Art Macao” also includes a number of other cultural events, including concerts performed by the Macao Orchestra and the Macao Chinese Orchestra, and events were also held under the banners of the International Youth Dance Festival, the International Youth Music Festival, and the International Youth Drama Festival.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau, upon the conclusion of Art Macao 2019, published a catalogue “Art Alive: Essentials of Art Macao 2019”. The catalogue contains highlights of the each of the exhibitions and performances held during the 5-month duration of Art Macao, with a preface from Macao Government officials, and includes articles from artists, writers, art critics and academicians commenting on various events.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME
The Foundation always intends for its arts & culture exhibitions to not only be entertaining arts enthusiasts and the public-at-large, it also hopes to incorporate comprehensive educational opportunities such as guided tours and related activities for local schools, young people and the general public, in addition to patrons at Galaxy Macau and tourists to Macau.
For the Grace Kelly Exhibition, apart from free docent-guided tours for the general public, the GEG Arts and Cultural Initiative included a special School Programme for local Macau schools. The intention of the School Outreach Programme is to provide students with not only a docent-led guided tour of the exhibition, but to also enable them to learn about different art forms featured in the exhibition, through the arts related workshops held after the tours, such as photography, pop art, and films.
Feedback from Students and Teachers
Feedback from Students
“The most memorable part of the exhibition was getting to see the Oscar Award because it is the highest form of recognition for an actor.”
“I learned about film editing in the workshop. I think it is useful because I can use the skills learned from the workshop in secondary school when preparing PowerPoint presentations.”
“I learned about film making, which I think is useful for my future, as I can use it when working with computers.”
Feedback from Teachers
“Outside of the classroom, the students are a lot more outgoing and they all actively participate in the activities organised. It is a lot more structured and ‘boring’ in class, but here, they are free to create and share their work, which is very good. Visiting an exhibition is very different to learning from books where they do not get to see real-life exhibits; seeing the actual exhibits have really given them a different perspective. Even their parents may not have seen these exhibits, and through the exhibition, they are able to learn about history, as well as about the Princess, so they were very interested.”
“I observed that the students’ creativity has no boundaries. Usually in class, we tend to learn through reading and recitation, so I was surprised they could quickly transform the content into animation, which was great! Technology has enabled the students to really show off and their unleash their creativity.”
