LANGUAGE BARRIER
The artist had created this theatre prop from bamboo for a drama designed for an audience with hearing impairment. This piece was commissioned by an Indian-American theatre director, who is herself hearing impaired, to create this moving sculpture, which uses a motor and a motion sensor. The fact that the 36 “mouths” are placed behind the bamboo grid represents disabled persons’ difficulties in expressing how they truly feel; these mouths can try to “talk” but cannot make any sound, thus also illustrating the experience of people suffering from deafness and having to rely on their visual sense to read lips instead.
